Location: Hazelbrook, New South Wales
Date: December, 2000
In December of 2000, the AYR were involved in a Documentary. The timing worked out well due to the fact that we had planned to head down to Jerry and Sue O’Connor’s house to set up a camera operation for them. As the reader would be aware from reading past articles on this location, the O’Connor’s have a 7-8ft Yowie living in the valley below their home that sometimes appears at their bedroom window at night.
They are first aware of the visitor when their cats wake them up from their sleep, and they find a large dark figure is standing at the bedroom window apparently ‘peering’ in.

They set up bait buckets, which are filled with fruit and peanut butter sandwiches, and these are usually raided during the night. The physical evidence is abundant around the location with feats of strength far beyond the capabilities of man throughout the forest. They ran loose cotton between the tree’s to find the path of the creature in his/her nightly movements about the property, some of which were routinely broken the next morning. We sent down a GPS for them to map out items of interest prior to our arrival.
On one occasion, they placed a voice activated recorder in a hollowed out tree stump, wrapped in a plastic bag. Leaves and sticks covered the opening of the hiding place and a bait bucket was strung from a height near the recorder. The next morning the recorder was found on the ground with the plastic bag torn open, and the bait bucket was 30ft from its original position. Upon listening to the tape it became quite clear as to what had occurred.
It is plainly obvious that “creature unknown” is approaching by the clear sounds of footsteps. The noise of the recorder would have been apparent during the dead of night and the creature changes direction towards the log. The foliage/camouflage is now being disturbed and a hand reaches in the hollow. The recorder is lifted out and the recorder is now being handled before being dropped on the ground. The creature then walks to the bucket and a loud noise of it being hit with force is heard – knocking it 30ft into the bush.

There have been countless witnesses to the Yowie in that area for many years.
The documentary opportunity spelt an all expenses trip to the Blue Mountains, including meals and accommodation. Our mission was to set up the camera equipment and leave it there for a couple of months.
Once there, Jerry showed the team around explaining what had happened and where. It was time to get to work.
Trevor ran electric trips while Ashley and the crew set up the cameras and Infra Red. After a few days and many technical difficulties, the job was completed. Most sides of the house were covered.

Camera One: Covered the bedroom window with a large IR pack.
Camera Two: Was placed inside a brick stack in the side carport.

Camera Three: Was hidden in a BBQ down the back end of the property facing bait bucket one.
Camera Four: Was concealed in the garden facing bait bucket two.
Small Infra Red packs were attached to logs and placed 10m in front of cameras three and four.
Along the side of the house facing the bush was an electric trip and cotton markers were placed at various other intervals.

Inside the house was a monitor, visual alert and recorder.
The place was wired, surely the plan had to work.

After the installation was completed and in between filming, I set off with Jerry to the other side of valley where he showed off some amazing items of interest.
The area was truly active. We also spent time with “Neil” on the other side of the highway where I had my own experiences with the Yowie. His fellow was still a regular visitor and has been so for many years. The entire regions still amazes us with all the countless encounters and vast damage ‘unexplainable’ to the sceptic, including the CSIRO.
It was an interesting expedition for all involved.

After two months of installation, it was clear to the O’Connor’s that the creature was well aware of the cameras. It wasn’t until 6 months later and a joint finding with the GCBRO that we discovered that the Yowie can actually see or identify in some way, the Infra red. A similar situation with the Nelson property when after the set up, the tracks became over grown and new trails appeared behind the cameras.
Sue and Jerry managed to get some decent for that two months while the camera system was in place, however the very night they packed the system away – you guessed it – they were back!
To this day, they still have their visitor and now they concentrate on communication including stick structures the creature leaves for them in their backyard. Both Jerry and Sue are strong believers in the psychic ability of the Yowie, as too are many of the first hand witnesses that live along side the creatures. As most say “They always seem to be one step ahead on every move”.
