Is there a Hairy man or family living on the Upper Macleay? That is the question posed by Mrs. Joan Delaforce (nee Clarke), of New Entrance in her Yowie story published below.

Mrs. Delaforce was a girl of 10 or 11 and living on her parent’s property at Dungay Creek when she saw a Hairy man for the first time. She writes: “One day, my sister, brother and I decided to go and pick Oranges. The Orange tree was about one and a half Miles from the house.

When we were coming home, we were to pass a small patch of scrub. One of the dogs ran up into the bush and started barking and growling as is it was scared. When we got a bit closer, we got a good look at this thing.

It was standing about six feet tall and was dark brown in colour with long hair about the neck. We didn’t get a good look at the face. We didn’t stay long enough to find out.

The second time we saw it, it was about a half-mile from the first place. We could see, through the cracks in the tractor shed, somebody moving back and forward.

One of my sisters and brother was with me at the time and we thought we would go up to the shed. We thought our father was getting ready to get the tractor out for work. When we were nearly up to the shed, the creature came out and started walking down the hill. It was the same thing as we had seen earlier.

Again, we didn’t stay around long enough to get a closer look. We ran home as fast as we could and told Mum and Dad about it. They didn’t believe us at first.

The next time, we saw more than one of the creatures. We were going to school and had to walk a couple of miles to catch the bus. We just happened to look behind us, over to the next hill.

I suppose at that distance it was about a half-mile from where we were standing. What we saw was two big creatures and three smaller ones. That was the last time I saw them, but my brother and sisters had seen them since. We did hear it once in the bush coming home from School one afternoon. It was making a growling sound.

When you see it, you’ll never forget about it. There are a lot of people who don’t believe us, but I am telling you that there IS a hairy man of a creature up in the bush.”
