Doubtful Creek, New South Wales, November 1999

Details
Created: 31 January 2006

Location: Doubtful Creek, New South Wales

Date: November 1999

I was reading the newspaper late October when I found an article about some "Wild man" that has harassed three homes in the rural town of Doubtful Creek for the past two years. The article read that it runs like the wind, sometimes on all fours and has a bad smell. They said that it kills animals to survive and lives in the bushland near the homes.

Of coarse I was going to be interested, and contacted the Journo who wrote the story to find out more. I explained who we were (and he knew of us), and he gave me the phone numbers of the people involved such as the residents. After talking to them I found that the Journo had twisted the story completely and the true story had little to do with a "wild man" at all, but some guy who has taumented these people nearly every night for two years.

He turns up around 8pm each night and runs around with a machete while throwing rocks at their houses. He breaks into their homes and steals underwear, even diverted their phone on one occasion. He slashes their fly wire, smashes windows, watches them while they shower and generally causes havoc. These people were at their wits end and had nowhere to turn.

I wasn't really interested in other peoples problems at that stage and pretty well left it at that.

Later that afternoon Today Tonight (Channel 7) phoned and asked if we would join them on location there and have us use our equipment to film this man/beast which I stressed was only some guy with a vendetta. A Current Affair (Channel 9), had been phoning often at that stage wanting to do a story on us, however we felt that ACA wouldn't do a equally balanced story and we kept declining. We also thought that Today Tonight may do the same, but this was something different.

Today Tonight said that they wanted us to be "advisors" out there and I stressed that if we came that we were there just to help them with the equipment and that was it. It turned out in the end to be a "Yowiehunters" story more than the people who lived there - no real matter it was an "all right" angle and story which put us in a good light. (Except for the fact they ran the line that we were there because we thought it was a Yowie.)

When we arrived we got straight into business setting up the cameras in different directions and we had people in the bush tracking and searching for angles where he may survey the houses. You couldn't have met nicer people than the residents, they even cooked us Breakfast, lunch and dinner! They treated us so well we felt like members of the family.

While we were setting up on the first day, some juvenile reporter from the Lismore paper named "Bruce Cutler" was there watching us and writing notes. He wandered around with a camera and asking us silly questions about what we were doing. He brought some feral from Lismore there who had wandered off the street into his office telling them he was an aboriginal tracker. This kid in his tattered clothes brought his dirty old dog also, and I really can't tell you which one smelt worse.

He even asked the people there if he could have their shoes because his had holes, then he killed their pet echidna for dinner and instead of eating it, he threw the blood dripping mess into their pot plant, then asked them for food and money. He thought he was pretty good for being able to catch the poor echidna, the thing he didn't know was that it was a tame pet they had raised from a baby - and he had killed it by cutting its throat. He got scared the first night because when he heard the Click Beetles, he thought it was ghosts of Aboriginals launching an attack - yes I'm being serious! Well that was enough for us, he was out of there even if we had to tie him to the tow bar and drag him back to town.

Back to business and we were all set up for the night. We had people in all directions waiting for this 'persons unknown' but nothing. One by one we did small interviews for Today Tonight, then headed back out again.

Phil was set up in an old caravan on the lower side of the backyard with his I.R lights and cameras. I was in front of the cameras at one stage in the bush and all I could see was one little red dot - but looking through Phils camera I was in a large spotlight giving him the full advantage. If this guy turned up, he wouldn't even know he was being filmed.

The fact that we were dealing with a guy that is reported to be 6'6" carrying a large knife that threatens to cut the residents throats was 'interesting'. The Police said that they don't have the man power or equipment to help these people meant that these people are left to deal with it by themselves.

Ashley monitored the cameras and gave instructions, Phil was hidden in the caravan, Richard was crawling through the thick grass, Trevor was in the next property and I was in the bush behind the homes.

When Richard came along, you didn't know he was there until he was about 3 feet away, I thought "that looks like a plan", and tried it. I lasted about 2 minutes after I came face to face with a black and white striped snake staring me in the face while on my stomach as I parted some grass! Better leave that one to Richard!

The main goal of the first night was not to catch him, but to use the equipment and find where he sits to monitor the movements of the people in their homes and where he enters the property. The residents said that this was the first good nights sleep that they had in almost two years.

It wasn't long before Phil walks in holding a tape. "I think I might have something interesting here", he said. We sat down and watched the monitor and sure enough - there he was. He was sitting behind a bush on the high side of the large property watching the house and he had no idea Phil was filming him! We then headed back out with the cameras but he had gone, no problems, we accomplished the nights surveillance and found where he sits for a good view. He didn't return for the night, the residents had a good sleep and we had a game plan set for the following night.

So far everything was working to plan......

The next morning when we woke, we were face to face with the front page of the Northern Star newspaper showing us a full colour picture of all of us and a detailed description of who we are, what we're doing there and details of all our equipment that we were using. That stupid......stupid reporter BRUCE CUTLER blew our whole operation in one STUPID move. He didn't care that we were there to help these people, he just wanted the story and didn't care if he blew the whole operation. For the entire day we had sight see'ers driving by and needless to say the target didn't turn up for the first time in two years.

We were out of time and had to head back. Not long after, we did some additional home work on the situation and all material that we have sourced has been handed on to our friends at the Police.

Hazelbrook, New South Wales, December 2000

Created: 25 January 2011

Location: Hazelbrook, New South Wales

Date: December, 2000

In December of 2000, the AYR were involved in a Documentary. The timing worked out well due to the fact that we had planned to head down to Jerry and Sue O’Connor’s house to set up a camera operation for them. As the reader would be aware from reading past articles on this location, the O’Connor’s have a 7-8ft Yowie living in the valley below their home that sometimes appears at their bedroom window at night.

They are first aware of the visitor when their cats wake them up from their sleep, and they find a large dark figure is standing at the bedroom window apparently ‘peering’ in.

They set up bait buckets, which are filled with fruit and peanut butter sandwiches, and these are usually raided during the night. The physical evidence is abundant around the location with feats of strength far beyond the capabilities of man throughout the forest. They ran loose cotton between the tree’s to find the path of the creature in his/her nightly movements about the property, some of which were routinely broken the next morning. We sent down a GPS for them to map out items of interest prior to our arrival.

On one occasion, they placed a voice activated recorder in a hollowed out tree stump, wrapped in a plastic bag. Leaves and sticks covered the opening of the hiding place and a bait bucket was strung from a height near the recorder. The next morning the recorder was found on the ground with the plastic bag torn open, and the bait bucket was 30ft from its original position. Upon listening to the tape it became quite clear as to what had occurred.

It is plainly obvious that “creature unknown” is approaching by the clear sounds of footsteps. The noise of the recorder would have been apparent during the dead of night and the creature changes direction towards the log. The foliage/camouflage is now being disturbed and a hand reaches in the hollow. The recorder is lifted out and the recorder is now being handled before being dropped on the ground. The creature then walks to the bucket and a loud noise of it being hit with force is heard – knocking it 30ft into the bush.

There have been countless witnesses to the Yowie in that area for many years.

The documentary opportunity spelt an all expenses trip to the Blue Mountains, including meals and accommodation. Our mission was to set up the camera equipment and leave it there for a couple of months.

Once there, Jerry showed the team around explaining what had happened and where. It was time to get to work.

Trevor ran electric trips while Ashley and the crew set up the cameras and Infra Red. After a few days and many technical difficulties, the job was completed. Most sides of the house were covered.

Camera One: Covered the bedroom window with a large IR pack.

Camera Two: Was placed inside a brick stack in the side carport.

Camera Three: Was hidden in a BBQ down the back end of the property facing bait bucket one.
Camera Four: Was concealed in the garden facing bait bucket two.
Small Infra Red packs were attached to logs and placed 10m in front of cameras three and four.

Along the side of the house facing the bush was an electric trip and cotton markers were placed at various other intervals.

Inside the house was a monitor, visual alert and recorder.

The place was wired, surely the plan had to work.

After the installation was completed and in between filming, I set off with Jerry to the other side of valley where he showed off some amazing items of interest.

The area was truly active. We also spent time with “Neil” on the other side of the highway where I had my own experiences with the Yowie. His fellow was still a regular visitor and has been so for many years. The entire regions still amazes us with all the countless encounters and vast damage ‘unexplainable’ to the sceptic, including the CSIRO.

It was an interesting expedition for all involved.

After two months of installation, it was clear to the O’Connor’s that the creature was well aware of the cameras. It wasn’t until 6 months later and a joint finding with the GCBRO that we discovered that the Yowie can actually see or identify in some way, the Infra red. A similar situation with the Nelson property when after the set up, the tracks became over grown and new trails appeared behind the cameras.

Sue and Jerry managed to get some decent for that two months while the camera system was in place, however the very night they packed the system away – you guessed it – they were back!

To this day, they still have their visitor and now they concentrate on communication including stick structures the creature leaves for them in their backyard. Both Jerry and Sue are strong believers in the psychic ability of the Yowie, as too are many of the first hand witnesses that live along side the creatures. As most say “They always seem to be one step ahead on every move”.

Below are some random pictures from the Documentary "Monster Hunters".

Kilcoy, Queensland, May 2001

After more reported sightings of two Yowies in the State forest of Kilcoy, the team decided it was time again for another trip to the area and we brought some of our surveillance equipment to be our eyes. It was also the second expedition for our two resident Rob and John. These guys are ex-Military turned Private investigators and have spent countless hours in the Australian bush professionally.

On the first day myself and Mike set up a separate base camp from the rest of the group in an area where we had the creature stalking us only months before. Ashley, Steve and Trevor made the huts their base, while the "ghosts" remained mobile.

Myself and Mike set up an 8 man tent which contained a battery pack on a trolley and an inverter for our 240V mains. We had a table that had a monitor and a surveillance camera bolted to a tree facing towards the tent. Everything was going to plan until we found that we were missing a $5 RC lead, (something that is normally always on hand in one of our equipment boxes).

It was starting to get late and the trip to the shops was now or never, so with no time to spare we headed off. While we were away getting this basic component, the "ghosts" walked the track up the mountain towards our top base camp. As they made their way near the site, they found over 15 large footprints on the top of our tyre tracks from when we drove to town. These prints, according to the Ghosts", were twice the stride of them and the prints were quite broad.

They continued to follow the prints towards the camp site and as they came around the last corner towards the tent, something ran off into the bush. They brought out their Binoculars at the same time and viewed a large creature behind bushes some 45 metres into the thick bush land. From there it turned and walked off past the lantana and not seen again.

When we arrived back to the bottom camp it was just before dusk and when we heard the story, it confirmed that if anything can go wrong in this business it will. The ghosts stressed that if we had of had the camera running, we would have the footage of 'whatever it was' lurking around our tent site.

In their opinion, it was hanging around the tent and although they didn't get a good enough visual, the prints almost confirmed what it was. So a $5 part crippled the expedition and it was also a part that I procrastinated about that very morning, then decided that someone else would have brought on along - lesson learnt, never presume.

For the rest of the night there was little to no action. We have learnt from many past expeditions that the action normally only happens on the first day or night so thats your time to do what you can. A costly mistake for us.

Operation Rotation

Dean and Trevor met up with Brett Green and his partner in crime 'Mick" who had organized to come out for the day. Brett is a most amazing character with many experiences with the Yowie over the years and holds a lot of information on this location and surrounding areas. It was at this location where Brett and 4 friends had witnessed first hand the power of the Yowie in a freak incident while bush walking 3 years ago. They were out exploring one day (as they did often in search of Ancient Aboriginal sites), when as they rounded a corner they heard what seemed like the noise of an animal fight of some kind. At this stage they had no idea what was about to transpire.

As they came closer, they cautiously made their way to the ridge of a steep decline that lead into a valley with a massive rock cascade. On the cascade were two large Male Yowie's fighting. The group of men froze in disbelief as they slowly and quietly went to ground and observed this fearsome display. They were in total shock at what they saw, and in Brett's words - "It was a Brutal fight". Although the men had cameras in their bags, they were far to taken by the event, to think of taking pictures and as Brett said, "The last thing we wanted was for them to know we were there - they were angry enough as it was".

Because this is Brett's story and it will make an appearance in his next Book, we won't give the reader all the details, however we can say that this fight seemed to be stemmed over either Territory or a Female. To cut a long story short, there were two 'clans' of Yowie there that day and Brett was lucky to escape with his life.

The location of this incident was less than 1km from Base Camp.

Brett has many other wonderful achievements in his life including several great books on a range of topics from Pyramids in Australia, Aboriginal Secrets, to the Yowie. He is the only person in this Country that has actual photographs of the Pyramids and stone structures from the Gympie region and facts that other researchers envy, and sometimes plagiarized.

Dean, Trevor, Brett and Mick all rolled into Base camp at the same time to relieve Mike's team. After a cup of Coffee and a chat discussing files, facts and figures about the Yowie, Brett was leading the way through the Forest pointing out 'items of interest'.

They walked many tracks and trails looking, listening and studying the area. It wasn't long before they came to the area of the "Feuding Yowies", which we aptly named "The Arena". Brett went through the story stage by stage, pointing out the exact places and what was viewed. It was a most credible and amazing story with the names of all the people involved as back up of the encounter. They searched high and low around the entire location, and one thing was for sure, there were an enormous amount of tracks through the thick bush land that looked very convincing.

During the early Afternoon they returned to Base Camp for a BBQ and a rest.

While chatting more on the subject of Aboriginal Folklore and the Yowie, they were stopped in their tracks mid conversation by massive smashing through the Forest where the other teams had reported hearing it previously. It was heading in their direction through the bush from the other side of the stream. They all looked at each other for a second in total bewilderment and amazement before Dean took hold of the Video Camera and tip-toed his way down the track to the Creek. Brett, Trevor and Mick then continued talking as if they hadn't heard it, with the view that the "Creature Unknown" wouldn't be aware they were onto it.

By the time Dean approached the area where the racket was last heard, the noise had all but vanished. When he rounded a bend in the Creek he found the most likely location of the commotion. As he stepped up into the dense Rainforest, he was immediately hit by a wall of "Icy Air" to the likes of which he had not experienced for many years.

The hairs on his body stood on end as these odd icy sensations chilled him. He stopped for a reality check, "Was this just a mere figment of his imagination?" He thought to himself. He ran through all the most likely causes of such instant fear, however the "Psychology Meter" said that he was fine, and it was not his imagination doing this to himself! This is always an important process that people should perform when in such situations. Always take a step back and analyze yourself, making sure that the fear is not self produced. You can rationalize your dilemma and position, then make a more rational and informed decision for your next move knowing your Psyche is in good working order. In this case, it was definitely an 'external' matter.

With the Video now turned on and the knowledge of the other men only a scream away, he pressed on. He recorded on video how he was feeling at that time and how he felt that there was definitely "something" there somewhere. The chills became so bad at one stage that he had to sit down and rest, and this was the moment he realized that all the wildlife had also become silent.

After a time of 15 minutes the head congestion cleared somewhat, he then continued searching the surroundings but found nothing. There was a clearing on the far side of the treed canopy that 'may' have been the route out for what ever it was, and it was at that stage the birds slowly began to chirp again and the environment resumed feeling "Normal".

The others were fascinated by the feelings that Dean described when he told the story back at Base Camp. Brett stated that he had also had such feelings when the Yowie had been around. Brett and Mick seemed to feel that the Yowie has a large Aura field that can affect other animals around it such as Birds and other Wildlife, thus the reason for the silent bush when they approach or are already in the area. Every living thing on the Planet has some form of Energy field, which has been proven to Science, and the possibility of the Yowie having a larger than normal field isn't too hard to comprehend.

Brett and Mick left the camp at 3.30pm, which left Dean and Trevor on their own for the night.

They had no idea what would transpire that night when they returned to "The Arena".

At Sun down they checked the Camera Equipment and started running the tapes. The Latrine at that stage turned into "Latrine's" and was a virtual minefield! You really had to watch your step or Boom! (Luckily, no one admitted to that mistake).

Dean and Trevor sat back listening to many witness tapes that had been recorded on our behalf by Tony Healy and Paul Cropper. Paul and Tony have been our backbone in processing the AYR's reports over time, freeing us up to perform our Research in the field. Paul has a most professional technique when interviewing witnesses, and it has been mentioned on many occasions that Paul should actually pursue a Radio career. He does a fantastic job interviewing these people and he also performs the task far better than we could. Not a single detail is missed and his charismatic persona ensures that the witness is at ease during the process. All these personal interviews will be displayed in their next book, which will be focused almost entirely on the Yowie. Something not to miss.

Dean and Trevor geared up. Their backpacks consisted of N.V., I.R., Video Camera, Flares, binoculars, bandages, drinks and other minor items. They hit the trail back to "The Arena". Once they came within 300m of the site they walked very slowly and precisely, ensuring that they made little to no noise at all. When they arrived, the boys headed down the dirty slope towards the massive rock slab carefully making the most minimal noise possible.

Once on the bottom half of the Granite grounds, they sat quietly and waited.

*[At this stage the Reader must be informed that what transpired on this rock was most unbelievable and hard to relate without them being there personally. So for all intense and purposes, we will withhold some of the actual events]

Dean and Trevor sat quietly at the bottom end of the rock face for half an hour with little, to no movement around them. The bush was seemingly quiet and there was no other animal life stirring at all. They left their gear at the bottom of the cascade, walked up to the top half with absolutely no Equipment what so ever and lay back on the Granite slab staring at the night sky. It was then that the forest came alive from above the valley.

The foliage snapped, cracked and moved from three different directions towards them at a steady pace. "Creatures Unknown" were making their way down the slopes towards where they lay with no inhibitions and making as much noise as required.

During this time only two comments were made by Trevor as they stared at each other in amazement. One being "This is like Custers last stand" and the other one was "Are you ready for this?"

They knew that their equipment was too far to retrieve quickly. They surmised at the time that this response could have been a result of the "Creatures Unknown" being encouraged by the fact that Dean and Trevor were not carrying anything and were now on equal ground. It was just a thought at the time, and whatever the facts maybe, the "Creatures" continued down the hill towards them. The movements were most definitely bipedal from all three directions and they seemed to be all heading to the one area, which was at the top of the Cascade. When they arrived, they stayed just within the fringe line of the forest surrounds, which was roughly 35m from where they lay. The boys were determined not to leave or even stare in their direction. Every so often, one or the other couldn't resist and would have to have a short glimpse. As these "Creatures" would transfer their weight from one foot to the other, the sticks beneath their feet would crack and break, but they seemed quite happy in their vantage point to stay and 'watch the Humans'.

*[Notice that we didn't mention the name 'Yowie'. There were large bipedal Creatures surrounding them, however they were not seen physically by either man due to the darkness and thick bush. They were not Kangaroo's, Dingo's, Cow's, Horses or Sheep. Whatever they were, walked and thought like Humans. They circled behind the men and watched from behind trees. The entire situation was clearly obvious and the event transpired over 30-40 minutes.]

Many strange and bizarre thoughts and feelings were observed in both men to the point that Dean decided that they should leave the area. Trevor was reluctant to go, as he saw this as a Golden opportunity, but Dean had had enough, so they gathered their gear and left. During the walk back to Base, they discussed at length what had just transpired. Trevor re-iterated the fact that they had somehow missed out on something that they should have stayed for and was still keen to return. Dean on the other hand, just wanted to get back to the relative safety of Base.

Back at Base, they checked the cameras and baits and went to bed with one eye open.

Loud and violent snorts and grunts were heard that night, but unfortunately it was only Trevor.

You see, Trevor is known in the group as the "Snorer of a thousand Earthquakes". It truly has to be heard to believed. He makes so much noise that we swear that the Yowie would be too scared to visit the Base at night, thinking there was something far larger and more frightening than he within the tent. In fact if we put Trevor, Steve and Rob together in a tent at night we have a 3piece band that makes all the forest animals hide and cower in terror.

After several noise pollution related arguments during the night, Trevor was banished to the Hammock. After he tore a hole in Mike's Hammock and fell through it in shear frustration, he then lit a candle and sat in a chair outside the tent. At 4am he returned promising to cut the emissions, however it wasn't long before Dean could stand no more and stormed out of the tent. It turned out to be quite fortunate that he did, as he found the Base camp alight from Trevor's candle! More heated debating continued as they put the fire out. Oh, what a night.

On daybreak, Dean headed back to "The Arena". There were no physical signs of interest besides some broken foliage and on his return back to Base, strange Howling sounds began in bursts from the top of the mountain. These Howls were not Dingo. We had purchased audio tapes of various howls and these ones were not Dog, Dingo or alike. At one stage Dean thought it may have been Trevor clowning around, however it was not.

Later that morning they met up with a freelance Journalist acting on behalf of the "Sunday Mail". He spent a day and a night with the crew, but it was a rather uneventful time.

The next day Rob, John and Ashley arrived for their shift. While waiting for them to arrive, Dean found many footprints through the sandy creek bed that were very fresh. There were the usual smaller prints of "Junior", however this time either his Mother or Father was following. This was a very exciting find.

Dean and Trevor went home and left the next crew to do their best. Apparently during their first night the heavens opened and the rain poured. The next morning the rain had set in and didn't look like it was going to clear for the rest of the Operation, so they had little other choice but to pack up and end the Expedition.

We were all very disappointed at the sudden end of the Operation and all look forward to our next adventure????.

Day 1.

Over the past months we had many reports come in from a certain location near Gympie, one of which included a family of Yowies, a Yowie chasing a trail bike rider and one up a tree. We were due for another expedition, and this seemed far too good to pass up so the plan was put into place. For the first time, Glennys and George Mackay joined us for the experience bringing their camper van and our guide to the area was Rod Sengstock and friend Alan.

The rendezvous point was 10am at a service station near Gympie, however we were all there very early and made it to the remote location by 10.30am. Rod and Alan set up camp at the bottom of the mountain in a hut, while the rest of us endeavoured to take our vehicles further to the top of the mountain, which was harder than it looked at first.

Myself and Trevor were the first to leave. After only 1KM the road vanished from sight with tall 7ft grass blocking our view, it was a long time since anyone had visited this area.

At first we thought we had made a bad mistake being the first car though, the 4wd's were far better suited for the almost non existent road. It was wet, the track was slippery and we had no idea if there were logs across the track ahead. The car slipped and slid, lost and gained traction, and finally the supposed 5 minute drive got us there in 15 minutes.

The moment we stepped out of the car at the top, we were face to face with a Python. The hut was old and dusty and the surroundings had absolutely no sign of the usual traits that we find with a Yowie in the area.

It wasn't long before radio feeds came through telling us that the other cars were struggling to make the climb. The camper van had stopped and gone back, as it had no chance of making the journey and the van too was forced to turn back. Steve was even having dramas in the 4wd. It was a good hour or two before we saw any of the guys.

Myself and Trev had a lot of time to scout the area for signs, however even a simple game track was found anywhere in the area. The hut was a location given to us by people who new of many sightings here, and they too had their own story to tell.

One story stood out from the rest. This report came from very credible witnesses who said that while camping in the hut they had seen three there. Apparently, just on duck while cooking a BBQ, they sighted a large male, a female and a juvenile approach from the valley near the hut on the edge of the bush line. The family of Yowies stood and observed the humans as they cooked their meat while fully aware of the visitors. After discussion, they left 3 pieces of meat on the cooker and retreated to the cabin and watched from the window. The smallest (juvenile), made a quick dash from the bush line to the BBQ and gathered up the remaining meat and ran back to mum and dad with the rewards, then they all walked off down the valley.

Rod and Alan (our guides for the weekend), also had their own stories to tell. They told of tree tapping at night, strange howls and footprints. They also had stories from others who had visited the area including a story of 3 trail bike riders who had been chased by a large male Yowie. The bikers had planned to stay there for the weekend and had unpacked their gear at one of the many loggers huts. We went for a quick ride up the hill that we had driven in on and as the last bike came over a rise, he almost hit the creature which put it in a rage and they said it chased the last rider for quite some distance. Needless to say, they were so shaken up by their ordeal, they promptly packed their gear and left.

The loggers who come to the location ever few years also have their far share of tales to tell as most loggers do, and our guide Alan swears that he had sighted one in a tree not far from where we were camped.

All in all, the location at the top of the hill sounded like a winner in principle, however there was growing concern in reality once we were there due to the lack of evidence that we could find.

One noticeable aspect of the location that there was an unusual lack of any animal, even birds. The only living creature that was visible was the snakes. By the end of the trip we'd found six - browns, blacks and Pythons. Great!

As the guys arrived, we unpacked the cars and began to set up camp. Ashley and Trevor set up the surveillance, while the rest of us constructed the campsite.

Two hours before dusk, myself and Trevor decided that we would endeavour to hike to the bottom of the valley and spend the night there in hope that 'something' was down there. Everyone who had hiked the top end of the mountain confirmed what we had originally thought - there ain't nothing here!

Of course the hike down the valley couldn't be a easy one for us - an hour of cutting our way through wet lantana made the hike hell. It was a good 6km to get to our destination, however after battling our way through what we did, we knew we'd be lucky to make it half way before night fall. Up hills, down hills, through mud, slush and lantana, we were exhausted! As night time set in, we pressed on further until we had at least found some kind of stream that this thing may feed from and there we set up our camp in the dark. I must admit, it was pretty darn spooky there at one stage when we thought we heard something walking passed in the night.

At 8pm, we received a radio feed saying that Richard had gone back to the van which was next to the camper at the bottom of the mountain and also Rod and Alan had gone back to the loggers hut for the night. Ash, Steve and Phil were at the top camp with all the equipment.

I found it odd that we had camped at the top of the mountain, but since we had so many reports from that specific location we had little option at that stage. Normally these creatures dwell on lower ground during the day and work their way around in search of food during the night. They do roam to higher areas during the night, but that seemed to be almost too high, the animal activity was low and there were no tracks. It just didn't seem right.

As the night went on, we also had little to no activity - not even small rodents. We walked some of the dry water ways during the night, and again - nothing - no movement.

I finally fell asleep at around 3.30am after wrestling a giant cockroach which had made its way up my pants. At that stage I had no idea what it was, just that it was big, fast and ultimately .........gooey!

We woke around 7am feeling worse for wear after the big hike down, the injuries had crept in during the night and the mere thought of the daunting task of hiking all the way back up didn't impress us one bit. I had broken the major rule of hiking, which was to travel light and my knees let me know in no uncertain terms.

I think it took us almost 2 hours of hiking up some of the most inhospitable terrain until we reached one of the major tracks. By this stage I was dropping to the ground in pain clutching my knees. We radioed the guys at the top and asked for a 4wd to be sent our way, an hour later we had managed to limp our way back.

Straight after, myself and Steve headed out over the other side of the mountain. This time all I carried was a two-way! My knees were still buckling and I was still dropping, but at least I didn't have a 55 pound pack on. Once we were down there we radioed Ash to come down in my car and pick us up. There was still no sign of any activity.

Ash arrived and we drove on to other areas to search for signs. At one stage we found snake eggs that had been dug out by hand, that was interesting. We also found a scat sample, but this was miles away from camp. A radio feed came from camp saying that Richard had arrived and they had action last night at the bottom - we raced back!

The story was great! This was just what we needed to lift ourselves back up again after feeling so disappointed. The camper van had been hit with such a force at 3am, that George and Glenny almost fell out of bed! Phil's van was attached via ropes to the camper, and that also felt the brunt of the 'whack'. It then went to the front of the camper and began pulling on the tarps. Richard (who was sleeping in the van), raced out but the creature had gone. There were also large footprints outside the van which we cast. Bingo!

The moment we heard the news, we packed the gear and headed off back down the mountain. We were clearly in the wrong place and just by chance, the camper stopped in the right place. The van was so large that a Human could not make it move, but it was hit by a hard enough force to rock it. George began yelling, and after it had a play with the tarps, it ranced back into the forest.

As soon as we arrived, we viewed the footprints that were left and Trevor got straight on to casting. I set off again and found a semi dry creek bed and tracked more prints leading into the dense forest. Myself and Ash found 16" prints in succession which Trevor cast. The quality of these ones weren't quite as good because they had been rain washed a little, but it was still obvious that it had 5 toes, instep and heal. Things were looking up. The tracks and foliage damage through the bush was inspiring, although it was obvious that Deer also inhabits this lower region.

I teamed up with Steve again for a hike down stream. The tracks similar to what was found near the camper van were heading down that way. We came so close that we found a wet print on a rock that was only minutes old and others in the sand.

That night while the others were at the camp fire, myself and Steve staked out two locations surrounding the camp. We made no noise as we sat and listened, then a strange 'tapping of rocks' began. It was a constant noise that originated from the other side of the valley. I put my video camera on, but the pick ups in the mic weren't quite good enough to hear it. We listened for a long time to the tapping and had all kinds of hypothetical’s on the situation, one of which that it maybe a warning call to others that humans are in the area? It was just a thought and that's all! The interesting things about it was that our guides also spoke of the taping each time they came to the area.

After a quick midnight meeting around the camp fire, we all headed our separate ways and performed the tasks that were required of each member. Ash was base camp commander in charge of communications and monitoring of the surveillance, Phil was in the back of the 4wd with Richard using the I.R. spotlight and video, and the rest of us split and hiked.

To cut a short story shorter, not much happened for the rest of the night as far as the Yowie was concerned. There was just far too much noise coming from the base camp and these creatures like to wait until eveyones asleep before they advance.

The next morning I went for a quick hike before we left. As I got to the top of a large hill after examining several other footprints along the way, I heard a loud crashing coming through the bush, then it stopped. This happened another two times, and because I was out of radio range due to the hills, I thought I'd better start to make tracks back towards the camp slowly. Then the tapping started - 3 bursts of about 20 taps against a tree exactly where the crashing came from. When I became within radio range I had Trevor come up for back up, sadly by the time he arrived the noises had stopped.

It was a more than interesting expedition, we all looked forward to the next trip.
