I’m a truck driver. Earlier, I had stopped in Gin Gin for dinner and an 8 hour sleep before continuing on to Kingaroy in my Kenworth. So I was well rested.

I was on the Isis Highway about 15 to 20kms south of Childers. There were scattered trees, rocks and long grass on the side of the road and it was all flat land. I’ve been down this road plenty of times before.

It was straight road and I was doing about 75 to 80kms building up speed. I was looking out for kangaroos and in the distance on the left hand side in the grass was what I thought at the time was a cow. As I was getting closer, I thought it was a bloke. Then I thought, that’s not a bloke. I saw all this hair all over its body. It was fossicking through the grass with a stick, leaning forwards.

I knew exactly what I saw and I knew what it was. It was standing just inside the fog line, which is just in the grass on the side of the road. I had a cold chill come over me and I was emotional. All these years driving and not believing this stuff. Now I believed it. It was just going about its business. I geared down and phoned my wife and she didn’t believe me, then I swore on my son’s life it was true.

Later, a truck came up behind me and I got on the radio and said ‘Hey buddy, did you see anything unusual?’ He said, ‘No’, I said ‘Are you sure you didn’t see anything?’ He said ‘No’. Then I told him what I saw and he thought I was mad.

After I went passed it, it must have jumped over the fence and ran into the bush. My truck as it went passed it, would have thrown a lot of air its way. The other truck was about 15 minutes behind me. I was dumbfounded. I was going to do a U-Turn and go back, but there was nowhere to do one. There wasn’t even anywhere to pull over.

I had a good look at it and I wasn’t scared, I was just shocked. If there was somewhere to pull over, I would have.

It was about the same size as me. I’m 155kgs, 5ft-9” and broad shoulders. It had hair all over it. Long black straggly hair. You could have said it looked like a bear from the back, but it wasn’t. It was more like a man. It had long hair from the head, like a woman. Shoulder length or a bit longer, straight and shiny. Jet black.

The grass there was only ankle high. It was leaning forward like you’re pushing a wheel barrow with a 2-1/2 foot long stick in its hand like it was looking for something. It was looking down and sweeping the stick around from side to side through the grass like it was looking for something. I could see hair hanging down from its arms. Kind of like an orang-utan and it had no neck.

When I got home, I got on the internet and read the sighting in Gayndah just down the road. I thought wow, these things must be everywhere.
