Small town a bastion of Bigfoot belief

Sasquatch is no tall tale to those who document supposed sightings, four of
which are said to have happened in 26 years near rural Seneca

Dave Wischnowsky | Tribune staff reporter
Posted October 10, 2005
From the Chicago Tribune

SENECA, Ill. -- A few months ago, the big news in this village of 2,053
residents was that its lone men's barbershop had closed after 42 years.

As the summer wore on, however, many locals found themselves bantering about a
more exotic topic: Bigfoot.

For better or worse, Seneca has become a veritable Sasquatch Central following a
flurry of investigations conducted by a member of the California-based Bigfoot
Field Researchers Organization, which bills itself as "the only scientific
research organization exploring the Bigfoot/Sasquatch mystery."

"My mind's open to anything. After all, they just found another planet. So, who
knows? Anything's possible," lifelong Seneca resident Jim Maier, 61, joked.

The rumors also create questions. From how and why Bigfoot stories can begin in
a place such as Seneca--about 70 miles southwest of Chicago--to the reasons
behind our powerful fascination with tales of things that go bump in the night.

"Bigfoot is one of those things that people like believing in," said Dr.
Christopher Bader, an assistant professor of sociology at Baylor University in
Texas. "Because, how boring would the world be if we thought we had discovered
everything?"

Since Stan Courtney of the BFRO first visited Seneca, he has deemed reports of
four separate Bigfoot encounters near town credible enough to post on the
group's Web site. Two of the alleged encounters happened in early June, and the
others date back to 1979 and 1983.

Courtney first posted two Bigfoot reports on the group's Web site July 9,
prompting the Daily Times, a newspaper in nearby Ottawa, to publish a story
about the rumors. After that story ran, Courtney said he received information
about other Bigfoot encounters. He posted two more reports in late August.

All four of the supposed sightings were within a mile of each other in a densely
wooded area just south of the Illinois River along Seneca's narrow and twisting
DuPont Road. Three occurred in Grundy County, while the fourth was in LaSalle
County. One account involved two Bigfoot creatures.

"We heard some commotion over in the woods, and we were looking down into the
trees. ... At first, I didn't know what to think," a man identified only as
"Tom" is quoted as saying on www.bfro.net, the official Web site of the Bigfoot
Field Researchers Organization. "If anything, it could be a man in a suit.

"Then I saw the second one in the clearing as plain as day. I guess I don't know
how to explain it, but I just knew it wasn't a man at that time."

"Tom" believes the creatures he saw in June near Seneca-- allegedly covered in
hair, standing more than 8 feet tall and reeking of a pungent odor--to be
Bigfoots.

To many longtime Seneca residents, such stories are actually nothing new. Tales
of a towering, hairy creature stalking the woods along DuPont Road date back
four decades, they say.

"Growing up, it was always the `DuPont Monster,'" said Kim Tedford, a resident
of Seneca for more than 30 years. "The [Daily Times] newspaper story was the
first I'd ever heard about it being Bigfoot."

Whatever the names, countless towns throughout the nation boast tales of the
supernatural. And like a good scary movie, those stories can provide a dose of
excitement, Bader said.

"Every state has its roads where there's a phantom hitchhiker, and every town
has its haunted houses," he said. "Regardless of whether there are such things
as Bigfoot, people like that thrill of uncertainty, that sense of danger. It's
exciting to try and discover the unknown. And it's a lot more fun to have that
little bit of doubt when you're sitting out in the woods."

Bader says he once sat alone inside an isolated cabin in Washington state at 3
a.m. with a recording of a Bigfoot "scream" playing outside. The effort failed
to attract any creatures, he said.

But it didn't fail to excite.

"The only time I've believed in Bigfoot was from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. that night,
when I thought playing that tape was the stupidest thing I'd ever done," Bader
said. "I was scared out of my wits. ... But I felt that thrill."

A belief in Bigfoot also can provide a sense of significance and belonging, said
Dr. James Alcock, a professor of psychology at York University in Toronto and
member of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the
Paranormal.

"One type of a believer is a person really fascinated by something strange, but
who typically doesn't have much background in science, or found science hard or
boring growing up," Alcock said. "But if they jump on the bandwagon with flying
saucers or Bigfoot, they think that they're doing some sort of science. And that
in some way they're a `real' scientist at the forefront of trying to make a
discovery."

"It's a shortcut," he said. "To become a paleontologist, it takes years. But to
become an `expert' on Bigfoot, you just have to read a few books and join a few
groups, and you know as much as anyone else.

"Another thing is that you're treated with respect if you join these groups.
Nobody laughs at you. And if you also bring up ghosts or other [supernatural]
things, people will not say you're an idiot."

The BFRO says the Internet has made it easier for people to report sightings
directly to investigators, without fear of public ridicule. Alcock contends the
Web also has helped such beliefs grow.

"In small towns, there is more opportunity for a belief to spread," he said.
"And the Internet has a small-town flavor. It's a place where you can seek out
those who share your belief."

On its Web site, the BFRO documents Bigfoot sightings in every state except
Hawaii, and the encounters occur almost exclusively in rural locations.

Boise State University professor of psychology Dr. Eric Landrum offers an
explanation.

"Perhaps people in small towns have more time to think creatively or
imaginatively, or they seek more distractions from their everyday lives, as
compared to city-dwellers," he said. "[Bigfoot stories] are fuel for the
imagination."

In Seneca this summer, many locals were having fun with the rumors. Groups of
local teenagers toted tents into the woods hoping to spot a Bigfoot, while
adults cracked jokes about how such creatures were coping with the heat.

But for some, Bader said, Bigfoot will always offer a big allure.

"For whatever reason, there's an inherent appeal to the myth of the Wild Man or
Bigfoot," he said. "Somehow, that's ingrained in us. ... Bigfoot is
`everywhere.' So I'm not at all surprised he's in Seneca."

Created: 22 January 2006
RENTON, Wash., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- 2005 marked a historic year in
cryptozoology (the study of unknown animals), highlighted by the rediscovery
of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, the first-ever filming of a live Giant Squid,
and the discovery of homo floresiensis (a hobbit-like human population) on the
island of Flores in Indonesia.
DUEL MASTERS(TM)Trading Card Game, created by Wizards of the Coast, a
subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:
HAS), wants to make 2006 an equally stellar
year for cryptozoological discoveries.
The trading card game, which features many awesome mythical creatures, is
asking the public to submit personal photos that perpetuate the mystique
surrounding creatures such as Bigfoot, the Yeti (aka the Abominable Snowman)
and the Loch Ness Monster. It is hoped that these photos will help trained
cryptozoologists finally track down some of the world's most sought-after
creatures.
The photo contest, which is sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, will award
one $5,000 top prize for the photo that best perpetuates the mystique
surrounding these mysterious creatures.  A second prize winner will receive
$2,500, and three runners-up will receive $500.
"This contest allows cryptozoologists-in-training to join me in the
thrilling pursuit of these legendary creatures," said Loren Coleman, one of
the world's leading authorities in cryptozoology.  "The collecting of these
photo entries will demonstrate to a skeptical public that unknown species and
creatures live all around us."
The trading card game announced the photo contest as part of the
first-ever Creature Appreciation Week celebration, which ran Oct. 24 to 30,
2005.  The full set of contest rules is currently available at Creature
Appreciation Week's official website, which is
http://www.caw2005.com.
Entries will be accepted until Feb. 3, 2006.
"While Hollywood regularly spotlights a few famous creatures like King
Kong in movies, most real but still unknown creature species live an anonymous
and, most often, unappreciated existence," said Coleman, who has been a
cryptozoologist for 45 years and has authored more than 20 books about the
field.  "DUEL MASTERS Trading Card Game has allowed us to honor and enjoy
those unheralded creatures while encouraging the public to learn more about
zoology, anthropology and natural history."

Society Claims To Have Scientific Evidence Of Bigfoot Colony

By Mohd Haikal Isa

JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- The Johor Wildlife Protection Society said it has "scientific evidence" to prove the existence of Bigfoot whose reported sightings recently in the Johor jungles have excited the world's media.

Not just one Bigfoot but a whole colony of the giant, hairy creatures which the society named "Orang Lenggor" (Lenggor People) as one was spotted in an area by that name, said the society's secretary Tay Teng Hwa.

"We will make public the evidence soon," he said today.

He said a member of the society had studied the creatures for six years and interacted directly with the colony.

"The adult creatures are between 10 and 12 feet tall while their children are 6 to 7 footers. Seventy per cent of the Orang Lenggor have a human appearance but the rest resemble apes," he said.

Tay declined to reveal the location of the Bigfoot colony or the type of "scientific evidence" in the possession of the society.

The claim by the society followed a statement by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman that he was convinced about the existence of Bigfoot based on information provided by Orang Asli.

Tay said the society decided to reveal its discovery because foreigners armed with sophisticated equipment were entering the Johor jungles to track down Bigfoot without the knowledge of the state government.

"We are worried these foreigners might find Bigfoot and then announce to the world as their discovery," he said.

Relating the background to the society's study of the creatures, he said a member of the society, who was a logger, came across Bigfoot when the creature encroached into the logging company's base camp to look for food.

Since that incident, the member began to study the creatures and went close to their colony.

Tay said the creatures, despite their size and rough appearance, were timid and showed no aggression to humans who approached them.

The "Orang Lenggor" had a covering of black hair on their bodies when they were young but the hair gradually turned brown as they grew older, he said.

"They like to eat fish and fruits they gather in the jungles, including durian. They also have a liking for river water that contains dissolved salt and would walk for miles to get it," he added.

Tay said the society would organise an expedition to the "Orang Lenggor" colony in either March or April.

Strange vocalizations heard by swimmers near Oroville

Date: summer june 21 2004
Butte county, CA

Nearest town: Oroville
Nearest road: Cherokee
Conditions: Clear
Time: dusk 9:30 pm
Location: Take Hwy 70 north of Oroville until Cherokee Rd.. Turn right. Follow till Vinton Gulch Rd. Turn left follow down to the launch ramp at Lake Oroville.

Description of event: It was dusk my friend, his girlfriend and I were relaxing and swimming at a launch ramp off of Vinton Gulch Road near Oroville CA. When we got there we heard faint sounds like there were two, what we thought at the time, mountain lions calling each other off in the distant. My friend fished while I explored and his girlfriend swam. When all the other anglers that we fishing too me and my friend started making very loud sounds just to hear the echos off the surrounding canyons of Lake Oroville. Then I remembered hearing on one of the sound recordings off of this website and how there was sort of a whistle at the end of the recording from bigfoot so I started trying to imitate the whistle. Well after about five minutes I heard something "running" ,and it sounded really large, through the treeline of thick bushes above the lake line. It was coming towards us. I asked if anyone heard that and the said no. Right after I said that we heard the same cooing sound earlier but louder within I'd say 200 ft from us at the bush line. We jumped in the car scared and turned around so we could make an escape in case anything attacked. My friend shined his light along the treeline and seen some eyes low at the tree line. So I stared whistling like I did before and it would make its sound softly. Well after three times I started mocking it and to our surprise and what made us leave was it whistled back to us. We took off. I tried finding sounds of mountain lions off of the internet that sounded the same but to no avail. Then I listened to monkey and bigfoot sounds and the only thing that came close was a Black Howler monkey. It had almost the same cooing sound. I don't know if it was a mountain lion that could whistle but I believe bigfoot is around and I will continue hunting on or around Oroville CA for signs or answers. I have heard many stories from my family and my friends about strange things from terrible sounds on Butte Creek which sent four grown men(my grandpa, dad and two uncles) taking off scared to giant boulders being thrown over hills toward a young fisherman in the Rock Piles in Oroville Wild life area. The boy's father came back with a gun but took off because of the size of the boulders scaring him. Me and my friend has also has the encounter at the Rock Piles with what sounded like giant boulders being thrown over his truck while we drove slowly at night. I was in the bed of the truck when it happended with a spot light searching but seen nothing but what I thought was eyes for a second just before!Scared the crap out of us. I'll keep on searching and keep you all informed if I encounter bigfoot again!

Study to verify 'Bigfoot' 24-12-2005

Study to verify 'Bigfoot'
R. Sittamparam and Chuah Bee Kim

JOHOR BARU, Dec 24:
--------------------------

The Johor National Parks Corporation is willing to collaborate with anyone wanting to carry out a study to verify the existence of "Bigfoot" in Johor.

Its director, Hashim Yusoff, said today there was a need for a scientific study to determine once and for all if such a creature existed in Johor.

Without dismissing the claims of sightings of "Bigfoot", he said his staff had found no physical evidence of the presence of "Bigfoot" either in the Endau-Rompin National Park or the Tanjung Piai National Park.

Sightings of hairy creatures said to be about three metres tall have trickled in over the years, especially from along the forest spine connecting Endau Rompin, Kota Tinggi and Tanjung Piai.

In the latest sighting, a fish researcher from the Johor branch of the Malaysian Nature Society claimed he spotted "Bigfoot" footprints at a swamp near Sungai Sedili in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi.

MNS adviser Vincent Chow said there had also been numerous "Bigfoot" sightings by villagers, who refer to the creature as hantu jarang gigi (snaggle-toothed ghost).

Villagers claimed they were usually seen during the monsoon and fruiting seasons, sometimes raiding orchards but not harming anyone.

Chow said, as a child, he had joined his father on search expeditions whenever a sighting of the creature was reported.

"These creatures could be trapped in a time warp and have not evolved like other animals," he said. "Forced to breed among themselves, they have not changed much over the ages and are greatly reduced in numbers."

Chow said there was worldwide interest in the "Bigfoot" phenomena and a lot of research was being carried out in Australia and America but not in Malaysia.

He said MNS Johor's investigations had found that the sightings were consistent about the size of the creatures, their habits, and the shape and size of their footprints.

He said sightings of the creatures were reported in Tanjung Piai last year and at Kahang, near Kluang, about five months ago, with similar footprints found at all three sites.

In 1995 a massive search was organised by the authorities of the dense jungle at Tanjung Piai following reports by villagers of a sighting there, but they found nothing.

Although fresh footprints with the distinctive four toes of the creature were found, "Bigfoot" remains elusive.

In 2001, at the 40,197ha Endau-Rompin National Park, several Forestry Department officials, Rela members and campers reported seeing the creature.

One of the sightings was at Sungai Kincin, a tributary of the Endau River. Fish bones were found scattered, possibly indicating that a "Bigfoot" family of three had just had their meal there.
