One Bigfoot, one big footprint 31-12-2005

One Bigfoot, one big footprint

(Daily Mail Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)IT has long been local legend, something to terrify villagers in the remote jungles of Malaysia.

But after several recent sightings, the idea that big, hairy, manlike creatures may be living deep in the rainforest is starting to be taken a whole lot more seriously.

The evidence that something really might be out there has even led the Malaysian government to begin a hunt for Bigfoot - as the creatures have become known.

The fever began when wildlife officers spotted a family of the hair- covered beings walking through the thick undergrowth.

Then there was the discovery of a large footprint about 17 inches long pressed into the leaves on the jungle floor.

Although difficult to make out at first, the three officers who claim to have seen Bigfoot say it is more than enough proof that they have not lost their minds.

'Oh yes, we believe the men who saw these animals,' said Vincent Chow, an adviser to the Malaysian Nature Society. 'I've been hunting for Bigfoot myself for years, and my father before me, so I know they aren't making it up.' Villagers and fishermen who live on the fringes of the Endau-Rompin National Park, 300 miles south of the capital Kuala Lumpur, have been reporting Bigfoot sightings for generations.

Mr Chow said even his grandfather had seen Bigfoot, called the 'snaggle-toothed ghost' by locals because of its crooked molars.

So what did the forestry workers see? 'They were building a fish pond on the edge of the jungle when they saw two large creatures, covered in hair and accompanied by a young one, come out of the jungle,' said Mr Chow.

'The men ran one way and the Bigfoots ran the other, each group terrified of the other.

'But after a while the men plucked up courage to return and found a number of footprints in the leaves.' The workers alerted a member of the local nature society, who took pictures. They also found brown hair snagged on a branch nearby which reeked of body odour.

'We're definitely on to something-said Mr Chow, who has persuaded the government to set up infrared cameras in the area to try to capture the creatures on film.

The recent sightings are certain to excite cryptozoologists - enthusiasts who study phenomena such as North America's Bigfoot and the Abominable Snowman in the Himalayas.

Although bulging files exist for the Endau-Rompin National Park, sceptics say the sightings are of sun bears, the smallest in the world.

But Mr Chow pointed out: 'Sun bears don't have 17-inch feet.'

Perhilitan Denies Catching Young Bigfoot
April 19, 2006

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) Wednesday denied having caught a young Bigfoot in a forest near the Tanjung Leman Jetty in Mersing.

Perhilitan Director-General Datuk Musa Nordin said none of its staff either from its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur or Johor had captured a young Bigfoot in the forest.

The Malay daily Berita Harian today reported that a young Bigfoot was caught by a group of 10 men believed to be from Perhilitan after it had been shot with a tranquilizer near the jetty, about 70 km from Kota Tinggi, two weeks ago.

"During the period reported, Perhilitan did not mount any operation in the area," Musa said in a statement today.

In JOHOR BAHARU, State Tourism and Environment Committee Chairman Freddie Long said if it was true that the creature existed and had been captured, it should be surrendered to the Johor government for further action including for research.

He was met after attending the State Executive Council weekly meeting at Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim.

Poser over baby Bigfoot poachers

21 Apr 2006
R. Sittamparam

KOTA TINGGI: Could the people in four-wheel-drive vehicles and a truck purportedly carrying a baby Bigfoot, who dropped in for dinner at a restaurant at a rest area at Felda Tenggaroh 2 here last month, be poachers?

This is the question on the minds of people at the rest area who saw the group of about 20 men and their vehicles bearing the Wildlife Department licence plates.

The Wildlife Department has denied that such an operation was carried out by its officers.

They are now asking if the group, which had also been seen at two other rest stops along Jalan Mersing and the town area around the same time, could be Bigfoot poachers.

According to people at Felda Tenggaroh 2, it was raining at the time and the casually-dressed men who arrived in their mud-splattered vehicles were sitting near the shop after having their dinner.

Some of the men were seen chatting with a couple of salesgirls at a shop, and when asked where they came from, they said had come from the jungle further up Jalan Mersing.

The men also told the girls that they had come from Kuala Lumpur and had camped in the jungle for the past two or three days, adding that they had shot a baby Bigfoot using a tranquiliser gun.

When the girls asked if it was a mawas (orang utan) they had shot, the men confirmed that it was indeed a Bigfoot creature and volunteered to show it to them.

However, when the girls went outside the shop with the men, the truck where the baby Bigfoot was believed to have been kept, was just being driven away.

Met yesterday, the girls said following a newspaper report on their story about the Bigfoot hunters on Wednesday, officers from the district Wildlife Department had quizzed them on the validity of their story.

The girls, who did not wish to be named, said they told the officers what they had seen and heard from members of the expedition group last month.

A businessman at the Kota Tinggi town area, who had also met the expedition members, claimed that he had taken a peek into the truck purportedly containing the Bigfoot and saw something big lying inside.

However, as the window screen of the truck was tinted, he could not see the creature clearly.

He added that the group members had turned down his request to photograph the creature with his camera phone.

Meanwhile, bio-diversity researcher Vincent Chow said there was absolutely no protection for the Johor Bigfoot and, therefore, it was easy for poachers to capture them.

"The Bigfoot, which has been frequently sighted at the fringes of the jungle here recently, has not been placed on the State's list of endangered species and no law has been drawn up to protect them.

"This is a dangerous situation and if nothing is done, the Bigfoot population in our jungles could be wiped out," he said.

Researchers look for Bigfoot; zoologist skeptical

FUNKS GROVE - Researchers have been looking for Bigfoot in Funks Grove, but a local zoologist interested in the elusive creature's lore said he would be very surprised if one is found there.

A report last fall by people who said they saw a large hairy upright creature in a ditch in rural Shirley attracted a team of researchers from Searching for Bigfoot Inc. of Menlo Park, Calif.

Angelo Capparella, a professor at Illinois State University, said he also heard the report and talked to the people at the time.

He said that if there is a Bigfoot - a big if in his book - Central Illinois is not the place to find one. Even though Funks Grove is a wooded area, there just isn't much habitat locally to support or conceal a large primate, Capparella said.

"Illinois ranks 49th out of 50 in the amount of natural vegetation left," he said. Only Iowa has less.

"As a zoologist, it's hard to give a lot of credence," he said.

The Pacific Northwest, the traditional center for Bigfoot sightings, has a lot of remote, rugged areas, he said.

"I'm a zoologist who's taken a curiosity in the Pacific Northwest," he said.

The research group from northern California has been stopping at various locations in the United States to track reports of the creature also known as sasquatch.

Team leader Tom Biscardi told a local television station he has been searching for three decades, and he estimates there are more than 3,500 Bigfoot-like animals in the United States.

Biscardi's team has focused on Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, California, Oregon, Montana and Washington, said the group's Web site.

The professor said he talked to the people from Bloomington who claimed they saw Bigfoot last fall. The creature allegedly scratched their car.

Capparella told them to try to record noises, get hair samples and look for footprints. He said he could make nothing out of the pictures they took.

"They gave me a call," Capparella said. "They seemed sincere about seeing something."

He has not heard from them since last fall. "They apparently contacted Tom Biscardi," he said.

They told Capparella they also heard strange noises and they were able to get the creature to interact with them in some way. Capparella noted Bigfoot is supposed to be very shy so this behavior would be highly unusual.

Reporter M.K. Guetersloh contributed to this story.
