Did you Know , Nice to Know, or Need to Know
IF YOU HAPPEN to get involved in duplicating footprints casts, then this information is nice to know.
Something surprises me, and I don't have an answer. Greg Long quotes camera shop owner, Harvey Anderson, as saying that the Yakima Daily Republic ran an article in 1961 or there about, concerning unusual footprints found in the Ahtanum Valley, Yakima County (page 392 of Long's book). I would have thought Patterson would have included this find in his book, but I can't find anything. Nor is there anything in the Fuhrmann files, and John Green says there is nothing on his files. If you have this article or can help, please get back to me.
Matt Crowley brought this one to my attention - a real neat alien story Click Here
Here is a shot of the trail that leads up to the petroglyphs in Bella Coola. The carvings are sort of "all over the place." Look closely and you will seen one quite clearly about center on the rock bluff. Click Here I would imagine that the ones on the ground would have been easier to do than those on cliff faces. Nevertheless, any of them would have taken many hours to carve, and we can only wonder as to their real purpose. I sometimes think that the purpose just might be the same as that for modern day graffiti, Click Here In other words, a simple expression of one's existence, coupled with nothing else to do.
In 1995 I took this photo of the view at the location of the 1941 Ruby Creek, B.C. sighting. Click Here It is shown on page 35 of Meet the Sasquatch. I originally included in the caption that the photo could have been taken at almost any time in history to make the point that not a lot changes in this part of the world once you get beyond city limits. This somehow got lost in the shuffle. Anyway, if you were to go to the same spot today and take a photo, it would be the same. Few people venture off the beaten track up that way, and I guarantee animals in those woods know human habits. Have you ever noticed that often birds feeding on carrion on a road side don't bother to move when you drive by? They know that cars stay on the blacktop - same sort of thing.
Roger Knights tells me that someone is claiming Igor Bourtsev's statue of the creature in the Patterson/Gimlin film does not show the curious lump on the creature's leg. The person states that the lump was a "costume fold," so Bourtsev purposely omitted it. I have this statue in my possession and have taken many photos of it. Here is the statue and here is the lump. Click Here What is happening here is the problem I discuss in Forensic Sasquatch No. 2. It all depends on the angle at which an object is viewed or photographed. It might be noted that it was Igor Bourtsev who discovered this lump and provided a very valid reason for it in the Markotic book, Sasquatch and Other Unknown Hominoids.
Brandon Tennant, who is organizing the Bigfoot Rendezvous in Pocatello, Idaho (June 16/17), is preparing a regular mail out (snail mail) on the event. If you would like to be on the mailing list, please email Brandon with you address. Brandon is at
Dave Hancock and I will be implementing a Sasquatch/bigfoot photo library. This will be a proper library facility appended to the Hancock House site. Until we get it up and running, I am providing a temporary library facility on my page - The Murphy File. A link is provided in the next section below.
Seen here is a photo taken at the Bellingham Sasquatch/Bigfoot conference last year. I am seen talking to young people. It is important to keep in mind that every day millions of young people become of an age whereupon some of them get interested in the phenomenon. Furthermore, many adults take up an interest, knowing little of nothing of the subject. It is an ongoing process that makes history just as important as current events. I am mentioning this as a result of a question on the benefits of publicizing historical information. It may be "old hat" to the seasoned researcher, but it is all new to most people - really there is no such thing as "old stuff," it all depends on who you are. Clich Here

SOME OF YOU will be receiving this news letter for the first time. I have added you to our list because you have indicated an interest in the Sasquatch/Bigfoot issue. If you would like to receive the back issues, please email me. If you do not wish to be on the list, then just reply to this email and state "UNSUBSCRIBE."
This newsletter is arriving in your email on the Ides of March, the significance of which brings to my mind the organizations and individuals who have "stabbed us in the back" after gaining our confidence.
Did you Know , Nice to Know, or Need to Know
Henry May and Sean Foker asked for an email interview with me for their site. They asked 20 question to which I replied and the interview is now presented at Click Here Question No. 10 in Part 2, asks, What, in your opinion, is a Bigfoot? My reply to this will probably ruffle a few feathers in paranormal circles. However, those folks can make themselves feel better if they (not me) simply insert what is highlighted as follows in the opening sentence: " Based on the evidence we have, WHILE IN OUR DIMENSION, bigfoot is a primate that inhabits the..." They can then add another paragraph at the end explaining their side of the issue. Seriously, the two main paranormalists, Kewanee Lapseritis and Erik Beckjord, have told me that they agree the creature is physical in our sense for part of the time. That is the only part that interests me, and in my opinion, is what we should all concentrate on. As my dear old mother used to tell me, "take care of the edges, and the middle will take care of itself."
Here is a rare photo showing Rene Dahinden, Robert Morgan, and John Green. Click Here Those of us who knew Rene are aware that he was somewhat "impulsive." Before he had been introduced to Morgan, they were both at a gathering, everyone kind of standing around here and there as usual. Rene and Morgan ended up in a circle whereupon one of the researchers said to Rene, "Have you met Robert Morgan?" At this question, Rene went into high gear and blasted Morgan with both barrels. When he finally finished, the researchers said, "I'd like you to meet Robert Morgan." I am told Rene turned quite red. I guess the lesson here is, "look before you leap."
Rene Dahinden is seen here (right) with B. Boyd, a government surveyor, camped at the 5,500 foot level of Mount Brackenridge, B.C. The German shepherd belonged to Rene. The photograph was take on August 2, 1956 - 50 YEARS AGO THIS YEAR!
Pat Graves is shown here in the only photo I have ever seen of him. Pat found Sasquatch footprints near Laird Meadow Road, Bluff Creek area, California, in 1964, and informed Roger Patterson of the find. Patterson went to the location and made a cast of one of the prints which is seen on page 106 (Cast #9) of Meet the Sasquatch. The creature that made these prints is thought to be the same as the one that made the prints found by Jerry Crew in 1958. Crew took a cast of one print which is seen on page 105 (Cast #1) of Meet the Sasquatch. Click Here
It surprised me a little that my forensic sasquatch sculpture in profile matches so closely with the drawing done by Ivan Sanderson of the creature that abducted Albert Ostman. I did not have the correct Sanderson drawing at the time I made the sculpture, so was not influenced by it. Click Here
(P.S. Rick Noll says it also looks like Rene Dahinden, and I must admit, it does. Did Rene omit to tell us something?)
Here is the full, uncropped, photo of the Francis de Loys man-beast. This image, in my opinion, adds a little credibility to authenticity of the photograph. However, as I have stated, I don't think this creature, if authentic, has much to do with the sasquatch or the yeti. Nevertheless, I believe confirming the existence of a creature like this would measure greatly in getting more professional research performed on the sasquatch issue. Click Here
Lynn Maranda, curator of anthropology at the Vancouver Museum, is seen here holding the Chehalis sasquatch mask. The photo gives you a good sense of the size of the mask. I took the photo when we were down in the museum storage room (an entire floor). You can see the shelving in the background. There are so many artifacts down there it would take weeks to get an idea of exactly what is stored. I would think that all museums are the same - probably 95% of the items they have are in storage, and very few see the light of day. I really wonder what the storage area in the Smithsonian Institution looks like, or the Museum of Natural History in New York. I doubt very much that any large museum knows precisely what it has tucked away. Click Here
Marlon Davis has confirmed in my mind (at least) that footprints made by the creature in the Patterson/Gimlin film can be seen in the actual film. He has examined the ground in the early frames and also along the sandbar in later frames. In his animations, the creature's feet are seen to leave what are likely impressions. He has also confirmed that the creature actually stepped on the wood fragment. Its foot sort of "clips" it and it moved slightly. I posted a story on the fragment some time ago. If you wish to go back and review it, Click Here
The Zack Hamilton photograph taken in the late 1950s and the associated story is well known to sasquatch enthusiasts. However, what may not be well known is that Hamilton took more than one photo. After the photos remained on file in the camera shop for about two years or so (Hamilton did not return to get them), the shop assistant manger, Dick Russell, took a look at them. He is quoted as saying in a newspaper article (December 7, 1965), "I got prickly all over when I realized they were the pictures the old-timer said he had taken in the brush. I never saw anything like them." Over 40 years is too long to try and track down Russell, but I would expect the other photos still exist somewhere. Click Here
When Henry Franzoni "crossed the floor," as it were, I was (and still am) surprised. He was (and certainly still is) a really great guy. He helped Rene and I create our web site, which in those days was a bit of a chore, and worked tirelessly in providing the IVBC (Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference). Anyway, be that as it may, I see Henry has a post put up in December last year, which totally explains his position. Click Here . As I have stated to Kewaunee Lapseritis and EB, and now to Henry, there is no doubt with any of us that the creature is physical (albeit not permanently to you guys) - we must therefore be able to get firm physical proof of its existence.
Vance Orchard passed away on March 7. I did not know Vance personally, but certainly knew of him as I am sure many of you did. For those who don't know him, he was a newspaper reporter for The Times of Waitesburg, Washington, and wrote numerous articles on Bigfoot incidents in that state. Loren Coleman was in touch with him late last year, and he told Loren how he wanted his "Bigfoot history" remembered. Loren has Vance's history and views on Bigfoot on his web site. Click Here
There is an old Irish saying: "If things don't change, they'll stay as they are." I just thought I would throw that in seeing as it is now the month of March. Click Here

that there was a fairly recent sasquatch sighting on the Chehalis flats. He goes on to states " We were out about on the flats three weeks after it happened and found some evidence of possible sasquatch tracks where the creatures were possibly digging for freshwater clams. This all took place near an area where possible vocalizations have been heard and recorded by residents. I have one witness who saw what he believes was a huge, dark colored sasquatch moving rapidly across the flats in a northeasterly direction, as well as two witnesses who saw possible fresh sasquatch footprints in the mud. I also have a tape of about eight minutes of possible sasquatch vocalizations recorded by residents." Ken has kindly given me a full report which I have provided, Click Here, and here is a link to listen to the sounds Click Here. I recently added a story about Chehalis, please have a look at it. Click Here. I believe Chehalis is a very lucrative area for sasquatch activity.
Ken Kristian tells me
Matt Crowley directed me to this write-up on Slavomir Rawicz and his "long walk." As with any event that has nothing to substantiate it other than someone's word and ink on paper, dispute is inevitable. All sasquatch reports are basically in the same category. Click Here
Igor Bourtsev informs, "Now I work for The Wonders & Adventures magazine (in Russian), arranging a web-site for it. They have published in the last issues three of my articles on our subject, and will continue to publish other ones including Bayanov's manimal. Attached is the cover with a montage of Jan's photo with Fox's sketch by Lydia Bourtseva." Click Here. Also, for your interest, here is a link to Bourtsev and Bayanov's site (International Center for Hominology)Click Here
Further to MK Davis' finding of creature footprints in the Patterson/Gimlin film frames, Jeff Glickman emailed me and stated: "I can confirm that the film records the subject in the film making the impressions in the ground." My thoughts here are that footprints observed are at least 80 feet from the camera (most 102 feet). Would footprints of a man say 6 feet tall and 250 pounds leave footprints that would be visible in a 16mm movie film at this distance? Keep in mind that the larger one's foot (i.e., artificial foot) the more weight that is needed to make an impression. The image shown here of what appears to be a footprint was discovered by MK Davis. The camera is about 80 feet away. Click Here
"Scotto" posted a newspaper article to the Bigfoot Form concerning the Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia incident. Please give it a read, and then come back Click Here. As you can see, there were no takers to try and find the creature. So, what do I think is going on here? First off, as I have mentioned, I don't think the creature has anything to do with bigfoot. It is possibly related to the Francis de Loys creature, or that seen in China, of which its hands and feet were cut off and preserved. The hands are shown here Click Here. However, as the press chose to call the Malaysia creature a bigfoot, then the stigma associated with bigfoot carries over. if any self-respecting scientist with two nickels to rub together took up the cause, he would immediately be branded as a bit of a mental case. Had the creature been "billed" as something else, things might have been different. Anyway, I now see claims of a whole colony of "bigfoot" in Malaysia - shades of the Tasaday fiasco.
Don Keating informs that he is hosting Ohio's 18th Annual Bigfoot Conference / EXPO, which will be held on April 29, 2006. If you are out that way, or can get to that neck of the woods, here is a great opportunity to hear first hand about events in the Buckeye State. For more information Click Here
Randy Stradley directed my attention to an article on hair growth. This is interesting. Click Here After you have read it, be thankful that body hair is not like head/face hair. Can you imagine what we would look like with 2 or 3 feet of hair all over? Sasquatch do not appear to have hair that long, so they evidently have a "body hair clock" that limits growth to an inch or so - except in some areas - there are reports of long flowing hair on their forearms.
Craig Woolheater has informed that the Texas Bigfoot Exhibit will run from April 7 to July 30 at the Institute of Texan Cultures, San Antonio. There will also be a lecture series during this time. Here is a link to the Institute of Texan Cultures site, go to Events Calendar: Click Here
Lloyd Pye brought this site to my attention. In my opinion, it explains how sasquatch (or sasquatch-like creatures) found their way to any part of the world (including Australia) - they simply walked there. Try and find the time to watch all of the clips, they are extremely interesting. Click Here Keep in mind that the fellow who came up with this material did not even go to college. He is blowing scientific minds on something scientists should have sorted out 100 years ago (I'm being kind). And I will venture to say that EVERY ONE of us thought about what he says when we were kids (I know I did). I am led to believe that most scientists are in a big box labeled "CURRENT ACCEPTED KNOWLEDGE," and beyond that box are millions of signs saying, "NO TRESPASSING."
The question of the availability of details in photographs continues to be debated. The question is, what is the smallest object one can see, or a camera record, that can be positively identified at distances in the range of 50 to 100 feet or so. Well, there are a whole pile of things involved here with regard to cameras, so I am just going to talk about my 65 year old eyes. If I were to ask the question, could anyone see a single human hair at 40 feet, the answer would be, "of course not, it is far too thin." Nevertheless, if something that thin or thinner reflects light, it can bee seen at 40 feet or even beyond. Some years ago, I looked out from my balcony and saw countless spider webs in a tree about 40 feet away. As the wind moved the branches, the webs appeared and disappeared. They appeared, of course, only when they caught the sun. What I could see was not really the webs themselves, but the light they reflected. Here is a shot I took the other day of the balcony and the trees so you can see the situation Click Here The point here is that one can effectively see very thin/small objects at great distances if they reflect light, or are the source of light.

THE MURPHY FILE NEWSLETTER
Newsletter #7 April 15, 2006 Editor: Chris Murphy
?C.L.Murphy 2006
Thanks for continuing positive feedback on this newsletter. As you will see under NEW STORIES, Sean Viala of Alberta, has contributed a great article on research he performed at Lake Minnewanka in Banff. I would like to feature other articles like this, so if you have done some research and wish to put together a proper write-up I would be pleased to consider it (fully developed article with photos/illustrations if possible).
On the question, is it okay to use material from this newsletter on sites? Yes it is, providing use is not for some commercial purpose, and the source is provided with a link to THE MURPHY FILE.
Did you Know, Nice to Know, or Need to Know
Fred Roberson sent me his novel Skookum: A Tale of Bigfoot, which I have just completed. While I am not into novels, Fred's approach to the subject is very unique, and this coupled with his excellent writing skills makes the book a very pleasant and informative read. Fred has definitely done a lot of research on bigfoot and native American culture. Indeed, I had to sort of remind myself every now and then that this was a novel - I definitely got "carried away." I won't get into the theme of the work as it is really a bit of a surprise. I will mention that the work can definitely be recommended for young people - no nightmares in this book, in fact, the complete opposite. The book can be ordered through Fred's website, Click inspecting a sapling that has been snapped off. Grover Krantz is in the foreground. He stands a good 6 feet high, so you can see that is about the level of "snap." This "anomaly," for lack of a better word, has been observed in North American forests for many years - involving both small trees, and tree branches. As similar damage to other trees in the area is not seen, then it can only be concluded that someone or something physically did the snapping. A man would have to be very strong to break a tree like that seen here, but certainly two men could do it. As far as I know, no animal (bear, moose, deer, etc.) would be able to make a brake like that. If one does not accept that sasquatch are responsible, then it follows that there are men wandering around in the forest snapping off trees and branches. Other than that , perhaps there is an outdoors man or naturalist reading this that can offer me an explanation. Click Here
Here Bob Titmus is seen here
Here is my height estimate for the Francis de Loys man-beast. I came up with a maximum of 51.5 inches. How others have arrived at about 60 inches, I don't known, although they might have added more to compensate for the fact that the creature is seen sitting. Ivan Sanderson says that it equates to 27 inches high on page 170 of his book, Abominable Snowman, and notes, "This is a fair-sized spider-monkey but not even a large one." However, on the next page he says the photo indicates a maximum height of 48 inches. I am not sure what is going on here. Anyway, as he provided the height of the crate on which the creature is sitting, I did my own calculation as shown. As to Sanderson's conclusion, given the creature is 48 inches high, he states : "This is indeed large for a female Ateles but is really substandard for large females of the northern A. Beelzebub group. Then again, gigantism is not uncommon among all the South American Cebidae." Click Here And here is a spider monkey, which I must admit looks highly similar. Click Here
And now we hear that all of the tracks in Malaysia are being destroyed because too many tourists are arriving to look for "bigfoot." Click Here Following this announcement, we hear that a state government expedition is being planned to look for the creatures Click Here I am inclined to think that this whole issue is just a load of nonsense
In February 1979 The Minnesota Archaeologist (Volume 38, No.1) featured some bigfoot material in a section entitle Stories of "Bigfoot" in Iowa During 1978 as Drawn >From Newspaper Accounts" (by Mark A. Hall). The last part of the Conclusion reads:
....However, the presence of some kind of large and certainly rare ape in North America, such as a living descendant of Dryopithecus indicus, would explain so much of a fragmented but constant production of stories of 'gorilla-like' animals that we consider it likely they do exist. As far as we know, no one has made on-the-spot enquiries in the prime areas of the North American bottomlands about this kind of animal. Until such an effort is seriously carried out the record will probably remain as fragmented and unsatisfying as it is today.
Well, that was said over 28 years ago, but if it were written ten minutes ago, it would still be just as applicable. As I say in Meet the Sasquatch, and as John Green, Tom Steenburg, and countless others say, we need a major research organization to "run with the ball."
What's happening here with the footprints at the film site material? How come we are getting into this at this late date? Okay, here's the story. I have actual full-frame photographs which I believe were taken directly from the original P/G film. I show these photographs on page 55 of Meet the Sasquatch. Upon looking at them intently, I saw what I believe are footprints in Frame 323. I show my findings on page 67. Some weeks ago John Green asked me to dig out the photos for something he was working on. I did so, and then thought that MK Davis might like to do some work on these images as they are as close as we can get to the original film with regard to FULL FRAME images. One thing sort of led to the other, I am sure you know what I mean here. Anyway, for the record, I noticed in this process that the images included in Meet the Sasquatch were cropped somewhat more than I originally cropped them so that they would fit nicely onto the page - no big deal here, just a bit more "scenery" around the edges. I will see about correcting this if and when the book is reprinted.
It appears that the enlarging earth theory has a few growing pains, not to mention a few political pains as well. The video I recommended via Lloyd Pye, was the first I had ever seen on this subject and it all seemed very logical to me. It was a bit like someone jumping into the sasquatch issue and embracing a particular theory without getting into all the other research and contrary findings. Anyway, nothing ventured, nothing gained. For those scientists who have difficulty with the theory, think of it as the last time you bent over and split a seam - that would be a major earthquake.
RobRoy Menzies, who has contributed many great illustrations to my Sasquatch Chronicle, has started his own graphics design business, Visual Media Studios. We wish him the best in his new endeavor. Shown here is his business card (itself a unique work of art). I certainly recommend RobRoy to anyone requiring services of this nature. Please keep him in mind during your "travels." Click Here
Win some, lose some. Sounds reported in the Chehalis, British Columbia area thought to be those of sasquatch appear to be misidentified. I received the following from Ken Kristian on April 5. "Chehalis Sounds Identified: Thomas Steenburg and Gerry Matthews (GrandCherokee) were our on the Chehalis/Harrison River flats early this morning doing follow-up investigative work on possible sasquatch activity in the immediate area. At 9:30 a.m. precisely, while exploring along the edge of the bush-line on the flats, both were astounded to hear the by now familiar cries called the Chehalis Sounds emanating from a pair of coyotes." I will note for those interested in Native lore that Native people believe the sasquatch is a "shape-shifter," and the coyote is one of the main creatures it "shifts to." So the sounds were close - we just need to move up a notch.
Here's a little bit of history. It is an image of the display card John Green used to advertise his showings of the Patterson/Gimlin film at Harrison in the late 1960s. Click Here
Probably nothing to get excited about, but we will keep our eye on this one Click Here

I have received a preliminary copy of Bigfoot Encounters in Ohio, Quest for the Grassman Click Here and Click Here. It is printed on glossy paper, so a very nice book with lots of great material on Ohio. When I worked on this book, I always had difficulty trying to find a particular county in Ohio. I therefore made a chart Click Here which is in the book. Now all you great Ohio researchers can spend more time searching for sasquatch rather than counties (but you have them all memorized, of course). Please go to the Hancock House site for details on the book. Click Here
The long-awaited reprint of John Green's book, Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us, is also nearly on the doorstep. This is by far the most detailed and informative work on sasquatch-related incidents. Click Here
